about

Broken Alias enters the 16-bit era with a brand new album, FM in the B4! A new venture into sparkling FM territory somewhere between the Genesis and Saturn that paints a wistful picture of a time that remains so clear in our hearts and minds.

While the 8-bit inspired sounds of past albums do make occasional appearances, the listener is greeted right away with new sonic textures abound thanks to Broken Alias' recent foray into FM synthesis. Round basses, rubbery synths, glassy bells, and decidedly digital drums make up the bulk of these tracks (which take on a generally more solemn tone than heard in previous work).

With familiar nods to video game composer David Wise and—in a slight departure from last year's Travelchip—more recent synthwave artists, nostalgia is already an integral part of the many stylistic origins that make up the material here. But the nostalgia conjured up by FM in the B4 isn't affectionately looking back on decades past as one might expect; rather, it's a testament to the "before times," as it's now frequently known. The pre-pandemic period, mere months ago, before everything changed.

Many of us find ourselves indulging in nostalgia as a way to cope during these bleak and uncertain times. With FM in the B4, Broken Alias offers up a personal snapshot of a bygone era and invites the listener to join in revelment of a past…or perhaps imagined…time. The world will likely never be a truly good place, but at least we'll always have music. This album is a good reminder of that.
